Hello Everyone,
Time for an an update on events at Knaves Ash over the past month.
Latest News
Our homebred Detroit Red was third at Newton Abbot in a Novice Hurdle which was very pleasing.  She then had a couple of quiet

weeks but is now up together and runs on Monday 5th July, again at Newton, in a mares only hurdle.

Red Twist is very well having finished second at Newton over hurdles in a Class 3 Novices Hurdle and then fourth at Goodwood on the flat, ridden by Hayley Turner.  Being rated 116 instead of a pound lower over hurdles is causing a few problems with finding races for him.  He will probably run on the flat at Newbury on Friday.

help from Gary Witheford who is the country's most renowned expert in the field.  He was still a little sticky at Salisbury last weekend and is therefore having more work done with him.  As some of you may have noticed he ran a super race in the end, beaten only about a length in second.

Eddie and Carol Rice kindly sent up Safe Catch who they have been running to good effect in points.  He was a strong finishing third in a Novice Chase (2m7f) at Stratford last week on his second run for us and his first over fences.  He looks a really nice prospect but has gone home for a couple of weeks as there are limited immediate opportunities for him over fences.  Safe Catch has been replaced by Top Tide, another of Eddie's.  He has been running in points and will run in novice hurdles soon.

Devon Diva ran at Chepstow on the flat this week, her first recent run for us. She showed some improvement on previous efforts for others and will run again in about a month on the all-weather at Kempton.

Bankers Bonus and Bally Conn have lumbered in from the field looking like they ate all the pies!  They will resume training for the forthcoming jumps season and are very well in themselves.  Inspector Qics will join them at slimming camp in a couple of weeks!  It's great to see their friendly faces again in the stables and heralds the excitement of winter jumping.

We have a new arrival from Ascot Sales - Ollie is a big 3yo

gelding by Central Park out of a jump winning mare.  He has settled in well and is now cantering on the gallops nicely.  We will decide in the next week or so whether to carry on with him or turn away and bring in again for the 2011 season.

Horses for Sale
A 50% share in Red Twist may be available for sale and I would recommend him to anyone as a horse to pay his way in the future.  Detroit Red is also available to buy or lease.
Tattersalls July Sales
I am attending Tattersalls July Sales from 7th-9th July next week.  I have spent many hours on the internet studying the form of prospective purchases.  I have one horse to buy for an existing client and should anyone be interested in purchasing or would just like to go to the sales to see what goes on please give me a call on my mobile 07980 490 220.

National Trainers Federation Meeting at Taunton
I attended the National Trainers Federation meeting at Taunton last week.  The main topic was the funding of racing.  It is my belief that having pandered to the Bookmaking Community for years, providing them with races (betting opportunities) at all hours of the day, seven days a week, we now need to cut the levy supported fixtures.  Two days later the BHA did just that.

Racecourses overall are benefitting from the sale of picture rights on races worldwide to the tume of 60 million per year but put only 15 million per year into the prize money.  The big bookmakers rewarded us for supplying 7 day wall to wall racing by moving their internet betting abroad to avoid levy payments.

If the racecourses and bookmakers want to get some of these fixtures back then they must fund them to minimum value levels of prizemoney agreed with the Horsemans Groups and Owners.

I think race-planning should include regionality.  We have all seen a week with three or four meetings at our local courses which Westcounty people can't afford to go to to support.  If racecourses swop fixtures amongst themselves this would hopefully boost attendance.  Going racing is too expensive.  We need to cut the cost of entry and discount further for families.  Offer the public value for money on food and drink and inform them about what is going on during or before racing.  More guided tours and maybe a buddy system where regular racegoers can show new converts the ropes would be helpful and would hopefully increase numbers.
And Finally
For those who were watching (Mervyn, Hilda, David and Rachel) the highlight of the month was to watch me being led by Gary Witheford, with a rope headcollar around my neck, responding like an obedient nag.  My entry into the stalls was a joy to behold!

Happy Racing.
